is using the cross trainer in the gym an effective way of fat burning and increasing my fitness levels?

Hi, im 12 years old and run 6 times a week. I take running pretty seriously and am considering getting a piece of home gym equipment. But should I get a treadmill to improve my overall cardiovascular strength, or a cross trainer because I already do a lot of running so I can build up other muscles.
