Is using a cross trainer as efficient as actually running?

dlr asked:

I’m a freshman boy in high school and I run the 1600 (mile) in track. Over the weekends when we don’t have practice I normally go to the gym where I workout and run on the cross trainer instead, should I stop subsituting the cross trainer for actual running?

If you’re trying to improve your running, you should run. Cross training is good as part of a training regiment but it is important to run. They are not the same thing and are not equal in terms of what they accomplish. It’s apples to oranges.
