How effective is an elliptical machine for weight loss?

femmefatale asked:

I have an elliptical machine and have been using it for 20 mins. per day. I just increased to 40 mins. per day and would like to know how effective this will be. I am doing this in conjunction with the diet pill alli. I am trying to lose weight, however, I am wondering if I should go to the gym across the or stay home on my elliptical 40 mins. per day.
How much weight do you think I can lose in the course of 1 month?

The elliptical is very effective, but I think it is more for gaining muscle rather than losing weight. Although that’s nothing bad, because once you have more muscle you will have a faster metabolism and will burn more calories.

The answer is yes, it will help. As for going to the gym, the answer is a complete non-answer in that you have to do what works for you. Everyone’s different, everyone has different needs when it comes to motivation. So do what keeps you motivated.

Even if you are on a diet pill, make sure you eat healthy – about 1300-1500 calories per day. You don’t want to starve your body or it will retaliate by making you put the lost weight right back on when you stop dieting. Better to start some nice healthy habits early on.

You might also want to add some other exercises as well to tone the muscles as you go along. Sit-ups/crunches, push-ups, knee bends/squats, back arches and so on. Toned muscles are healthier and look better.

And good for you. Taking an active role in your health is a positive thing to do. Keep it up and have a positve attitude.

40 minutes a day is a great way to stay fit, I don’t know much about the pill but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I would suggest lifting a little bit of weights (low weight high amount of reps) a 3-4 times a week and staying on a healthy diet, its a sure way to lose weight

You could probably just join the gym elliptical and lift wieghts all right thre.

The elliptical machine can be very good for weight loss if used correctly. ost people do not set the resistance high enough in order to get maximum results. The elliptical is a “momentum” machine. The momentum gained after starting the machine keeds it going with minimal effort from your muscles. Most people notice that they can go for much longer on an elliptical machine than on a treadmill: the reason is that there is much more effort involved in running on a treadmill than using an elliptical. Unless you are unable, I would recommend getting a good pair of running shoes and jogging on a treadmill. I think you will notice more weightloss with actually less time spent on the machine.

The eliptical is veeerrry effective :)
as it’s building small muscles which will help you burn more fat even whilst your sitting doing nothing :)

In my opinion its one of the most effective for losing weight, i had the best success with it compared to the rest of the equiptment at the gym, as it brought my heartrate up, i broke out a huge sweat, and it was building small muscles.

for maximum results try doing it really hard for about a 3 minutes or more then switching to easier for the same, then up again and so on. it’s been scientificly proven that you lose weight more affectivly this way:)

as for the gym pleeease do not waste your money!, its so much more easier and fun to motivate yourself to workout at home.
when i was joined at a gym i went about 10 days in 3 months, ha bad i know, but before heading off to the gym something held me back, and i was to scared to go. excercising at home you can do it whenever you want, listen/watch whatever you want, whenever you want! and knowones watching you:) and i seem to go on my bike alot when im at home because its right in my reach. i mean some people are different and going to the gym is easy. but yeee i really wouldnt waste your money.

if you get bored of your elliptical there is soooooooooooo many more things you can do without costing you a dime, if you dont know of any of them just do some gooogling:)

Hope this helps, and good luck!
