How can I maximize my workout on my elliptical machine?

I have an elliptical machine and I really want to target my thighs and upper legs (and butt) when I workout….How can I utilize the settings on the machine and would ankle weights or other enhancers work? The settings go from 1 to 10 and I can adjust intervals and stride. Is Max stride better or minimum stride. I’ll appreciate any tips or advice anyone can give.
