Google gods/goddesses: I’m looking for a QUIET elliptical exercise machine. Suggestions?
Bill asked:
I don’t want to irk the neighbors with any noise, but I need to lose some excess poundage and ellipticals rock. Brand names, costs and other relevant suggestions welcome.

Models that did best in our tests cost well over $2,000. Paying that kind of money gets you solid construction that comes close to the quality of a gym machine, very good ergonomics, and a wide range of exercise intensity. You also typically get a more generous warranty.
For $1,000 we found a CR Best Buy that lacks the gym-machine feel of the top-rated models but should be fine for most users.
NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 CR Best Buy at $1000 with an overall score of 73 out of 100 (very good) Ergonomics, construction and ease of use were rated very good, exercise range was rated excellent.
Scwinn 430 $800 overall rating 69 out of 100 (at the lower end of the very good range) Ergonomics – good, construction-excellent, and ease of use – very good, exercise range – excellent.
Not Recommended Models:
The Diamondback 460Ef ellipticals we tested had several defects that hampered operation. On one machine, the problem was a misaligned resistance belt. On another 460Ef, the belt slipped during high intensity exercise. We gave the model a Not Recommended rating. The owner’s manual for the Nautilus NE 3000 elliptical, powered by an internal generator as you pedal, tells users to “simply pedal at 25 rpm or higher to activate the computer.” But when the resistance was set at 16 or higher (on a scale of 0 to 20) and rpm was below 50, the power kept cutting off. The model received a Not Recommended rating for that reason.
The test-result columns are arranged by order of importance in the scoring for each machine. The Ratings rank elliptical exercisers by overall performance. Quick Picks takes other considerations into account, such as value.

I have one of those quiet stationary bikes I like it and it works well for me but I really like Zan’s recommendation. I’ll have to give that a whirl
Zan the link was interesting but not to my tastes.

There’s no way I’m gonna even touch Reba’s answer. She has all the info for you. Me? My solution is a bit more conventional. When having sex with the wife (or whoever), just make sure you’re on your back and then move your legs up in the air in a circular bicycle-like rotation.
I think the Kama Sutra refers to this position as “depedaling the flower.”
